Field Trip: Seven Tubs Natural Area

One of the greatest adventures this summer was discovering Seven Tubs. This is a preserved natural area, at the foot of the Poconos, formed by melting glaciers from the Ice Age. The rock formations are primarily sandstone, but are also comprised of coal, shale, and limestone.

This woodland setting is also home to white-tail deer, the red fox, and black bears. I personally am betting on mountain lions, bobcats, and coyotes. And in the mining caves and rock overhangs reside the bats- a personal fave. An amazing array of birds can be heard singing among the treetops.

Waterfalls are the main attraction. The water cascading from the falls pools in several locations- seven to be exact- creating a wondrous scene. We were attempting to use one of the rock formations as a slide when we heard the last call warning of the attending ranger- who kindly escorted us out. And the sweet brown bats left their roost just in time to bid us farewell.

The city of Binghamton features six carousels located at different places within Broome County. It has been called the *Carousel Capital of the World.*  This collection of carousels is rich in history and incomparable in historical design.

The carousels were all donated by businessman George Johnson of Endicott-Johnson fame, with the intent that any child that wanted to ride the 'horse ballet' would be welcome to do so. The carousel at Ross Park was installed in 1920 and is home to thirty-six animals.

Field Trip: The Detroit Institute of Arts

Detroit Institute of Arts is one of my favorite museums in the world, (yes- it's true- even compared to the Tate, Louvre, The Getty, National Gallery- you get what I am saying) so I was excited about taking everyone (baby included) to the DIA for the Spanish Masterpieces exhibition. It included work by five Spanish artists: Goya, El Greco, Velasquez, Picasso, & Dali.

In honor of Dali's infamous moustache- DIA implemented superb marketing-  anyone sporting a moustache received complimentary admission. Wha?!. Awesome! We had a seriously grand time & it was cool to see everyone wandering around  Rivera Court with moustaches. Kudos once again to the DIA for modernizing the museum experience & keeping it fresh... they seem to have it mastered.
