Horse Cupcakes

5/8/2014

On the heels of the Kentucky Derby- which I will score tickets to someday + to further explore the Merry-Go-Round theme- let's go off to the races with some horse cupcakes.

Not going to lie- they are kind of time consuming to make and my mom totally helped me with them- because you def need two hands, + an extended timeframe to allow them to set. And yes- your kids can help- but only with certain parts- like putting on the tail. And kind of like the Kentucky Derby- there is a ton of preparation involved for a two minute race to the finish- which in this case is a children's birthday party.

Traditional Botanical Eggs + Onion Peel Dye

4/19/2014

Once upon a time, we made the modern version of botanical easter eggs using regular dyes. Today we bring you the real deal for your egg-dyeing enjoyment.

My daughter asked my gma if we could dye eggs using her traditional onion peel and plant clipping method. So, without further ado, here is the process that will yield shiny brown eggs with a unique design.

These sweet little nests are perfect for spring, and can be filled with Easter candy that will probably be making its way into your home in obscene amounts. Toddlers and big kids can definitely help with this edible project. Drop some off at the easter open house, and keep a tray for an afternoon treat little bunnies can munch on.

Hello Spring Chocolate & Coconut Bird Nests

Picture
Springtime is here and what better way to celebrate than to create chocolate bird nests- using extra chocolate bunnies that are probably hopping around the house. Children can help with this entire project; it's simple and hard to mess up.
Picture
Tear the foil wrapping off of the chocolate bunnies and break them apart into pieces. Melt the chocolate, stirring frequently to avoid scalded chocolate. [chocolate chips may be substituted for Easter chocolate]
Picture
Throw some coconut into the melted chocolate concoction- add more if needed. Just estimate the measurements- you should be  should be able to spoon a large dollop of the chocolate and shredded coconut mixture onto a cookie sheet. Place some eggs [whatever candy at home that resembles an egg- jellybeans, malted eggs, etc] in the center of each nest. Place in refrigerator until set.

Botanical Easter Eggs

4/7/2012

Picture
Botanical Easter eggs are a family tradition. Modified for modern schedules; this is the first time dye was used. [the onion peel technique was abandoned] The imprint of the plants will remain in white. The clipping prevents the color from saturating the white surface it is covering. So you are left with artistic eggs- no two are alike.

Ingredients:
One dozen boiled eggs
Food Coloring or Egg Dye
Tights/Pantyhose
Twist Ties
Tall Drinking Glasses* [optional]
Various Plant Clippings: leaves, flower petals, ferns, grasses, etc

Time to find all the eggs that sly rabbit hid around the backyard! For a unique way to locate the eggs as they are lying in wait- try a hunt using photographic clues. Very simple to do- tried it last year & it was actually requested again this year because traditional egg hunts were 'too tricky.'

Ingredients:
Hollow Plastic Eggs, any variety
Photo paper, regular paper works fine
Camera & Printer

Musical Eggs

This musical egg activity turns plastic eggs into percussion instruments and your little musician into Robert Plant- yeah, not really- but you can dream... Fun for Easter, but definitely can be enjoyed all year.  Each egg will kick a brand new flava in your ear.

If you have a junk drawer, now is the time to raid it! This is a simple project for school age kids, but enjoyable play for toddlers. You can gently shake them for babies (not too close) to introduce them to different sounds.

Ingredients:
Plastic Easter Eggs
Hot Glue Gun
Variety of Objects:* dried beans, pebbles, buttons, tiny bells, rice, coins, etc...
Ribbon [optional]
Empty Egg Carton [optional]
Search around your house & outside for small objects, tiny enough to fit inside a plastic egg. An empty egg carton is convenient for keeping items organized & for future musical egg storage.  Allow kids to search for items- like a treasure hunt. Try a variety of objects to create a diverse range of sounds.
Picture
Get the glue gun ready. Place items inside eggs. Glue one side of the egg, then close it. Hold together until it cools. For reinforcement, you can glue around the seam of the egg. To hide the unsightly glue- just wrap a ribbon around the egg [not pictured] while the glue is still pliable. Voila!

Now you are ready to form a band & go on tour. Start the PR machine rolling...

*Major Warning: These eggs are not Fort Knox- Adult supervision required until age 4 as some items may pose an extreme choking hazard.
