Field Trip | Dossin Great Lakes Museum

The Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle is a must when it comes to great places to visit in Detroit. It’s a fun spot for all age ranges; toddlers will love all the gadgets they can put their hands all over and preschoolers, while older kids will love the imaginative play that can be found around every corner. Teenagers don't like to do anything, but drag them along- they might not hate it.
But wait- There's More! Click 'Read More' to get the full scoop...         ↓↓↓
The entryway to the museum is a piece restored from the City of Detroit III, a steamboat that once upon a time sailed Lake Erie and the Detroit River. The museum houses one of the largest collections of model ships found anywhere in the world. Check out the pilot house from the Great Lakes freighter- kids (and adults) can pretend to steer on the open water. The best part is that you feel like you’re actually setting sail on a huge freighter because the windows all face the Detroit River.

This maritime museum has awesome displays that coordinate perfectly with its sister institution- the Detroit Historical Museum. If you love the DHM as much as we do, then get over to the Dossin Museum pronto. It’s entirely new information presented with the familiarity of the historical museum. When we visited, there was even some cool crafts for kids to do themselves at different stations.

See how the local community uses nearby waterways for transit, commerce and leisure in the “Built By the River” display. Go wild over the artifacts found on the shores of Belle Isle in the “Outdoor Treasures” exhibit, which features an anchor from the Edmund Fitzgerald and actual cannons from the War of 1812, which was fought on Lake Erie. Bombs away!
