The Greatest Show on Earth is tonight! The Perseids Meteor Shower is a spectacular cosmic event, which occurs yearly every August 12th. Starting at the age of 7, my dad would wake my sister & I up around 2 in the a.m. to watch the stars fall from the sky. One year, I saw 212 stars- that's a lot of wishes.

Check it out during peak hours [usually between 11-3am- depending upon where you live] and you will see up to sixty meteors an hour! Viewing can be from virtually anywhere- although my preference is the Rocky Mountains [Elevation 11,990 above sea level] for optimal viewing.
Reports are stating that the moon + clouds will make viewing difficult this year. You can try to catch the downpour of stars [hopefully not rainshowers] a few hours before sunrise, away from the shining lights of the city.
Check out this list I compiled of stellar places to watch the Perseids shower in the Detroit area. It's from last year, so check with the venue to make sure the event is on & poppin' before you leave tonight. And if you are heading out on a stargazing journey this evening, pack some blankets, a thermos of coffee for the adults + hot chocolate for the kitty-kats [my daughter suggested peach herbal tea, so if they like tea-go for it!] and maybe bug spray. If the ground is soaked from the rain, grab one of those retro folding lawn chairs if you have them. And following the advice of the great Manny Gordon: Enjoy! Enjoy!
