Traditional Botanical Eggs + Onion Peel Dye

4/19/2014

Once upon a time, we made the modern version of botanical easter eggs using regular dyes. Today we bring you the real deal for your egg-dyeing enjoyment.

My daughter asked my gma if we could dye eggs using her traditional onion peel and plant clipping method. So, without further ado, here is the process that will yield shiny brown eggs with a unique design.

Instructions + play-by-play pics below. Just click on Read More                ↓↓↓

Ingredients:
One dozen eggs
Onion Peels [whatever you have collected & saved during the week]
Tights/Pantyhose
Twist Ties
A Needle
Small container of water
A Dollop of Lard [optional] put onto a paper towel
Various Plant Clippings: leaves, flower petals, ferns, grasses, etc

The night before the big event, place onion peels in a large pot filled 3/4 with cold water. Let them soak overnight.

Go outside, bring a basket or container. Pick an assortment of leaves, grasses and flowers. Throw some stems into the mix. Please note: we have found that conifers don't resist the dye well enough, so forgo the evergreens.

Now you are ready to begin! Gather the ingredients and let the assembly begin! Choose a plant item from your collection, dip into water. [this helps the leaf adhere to the shell better.] Now place onto egg. If you want more designs on the egg, add more plants to the shell.

Grab the stocking & gently nestle the egg to the toe area. twist the stocking tightly over the egg and hold into place with a twist tie.

Here's where the needle comes into play. Use the needle to reposition the leaf through the stocking until it is where you want it. More often than not, the greenery moves around a bit & needs to be moved a little bit. Now onto the next one.

Once you have finished adding the botanicals to the eggs, you are ready to place the entire stocking into the pot of onion-peels.

Gently add the eggs to the water. Bring to a boil. Let it boil for 15 minutes. Transfer the eggs into a bowl containing cold water. Gently agitate with your hands.

Once cooled, remove eggs from the pantyhose. Shine each egg with a touch of lard.

You should be left with some very pretty eggs.

The End!
